How to make enemies go kaboom with stick?

Ok so this time I need help with making my sword functional on enemies. I already tried a few things but I cant get it to work. Please help.

you need to calculate the distance of the sword from the enemy. If it is smaller than some value (e.g. sword length), then you deal damage when you attack .
